I came to Dubai in 1971 as one of Port Rashid's 3 man "Start Up" Team. I intended to stay a couple of years. I stayed 30+ years working in Dubai's Ports. In that time I saw Dubai change from small coastal trading town to internationally recognised Financial, Business, Trade and Tourist Centre. Occasionaly I took photos!
My "snapshot" photos of Old Dubai now have historical and nostalgic interest as will many of the photos taken by Dubai's Expatriates over these years.
My photos faded over time. I recovered these negatives and slides with the help of Adobe Photoshop CS4 and taught myself how to build a website. Dubaiasitusedtobe.com is the result!
My site is not "all my own work". Friends and visitors have contributed their photos. I encourage Visitors to look for their "dusty" photo albums and find photos of Old Dubai to add to the site. Maybe Mum and Dad's Albums from their Dubai days are still stored in the attic!
There is growing interest in images of Dubai as it used to be. But there is also a scarcity of the images so your contributions will be welcomed.
Dubai has been developing over the past 50 plus years. Pace of development increased rapidly in later years producing the phenomena that is modern Dubai. But its glitz and glamour hide significant changes to Dubai's way of life. My Website aim is to create an understanding of what has gone before through photos and stories.
Dubai's modern history is recorded in the thousands of photographs taken by Expatriates of all nationalities. Only a few photographers such as Ronald Coodrai, Ramesh Shukla and Noor Ali Rashid captured Dubai as it used to be and made their photos available to the public. My aim is to create an online interest in Dubai's modern history so those photos of Dubai as it used to be are taken out of their Albums and put onto the Internet for all to see, appreciate and understand.
Please browse Dubai as it used to be! Be surprised at what you find! Always pleased to receive your comments and feedback.
