Hatta was still an isolated village in the early 1970s. Traveling to Hatta required a camel or a four wheel drive to cross the desert. Sheikh Rashid maintained a Guest House in Hatta and was a frequent visitor. Around 1972 work began on building a road to Hatta. Hatta was an important tobacco growing area. Tobacco was then a significant export for Dubai. Hatta Road opened around 1977. This photo was taken in 1978. Traffic was light in those days. Today Hatta Road is an important trade route to Oman.
