This photo shows Dubaiside as it used to be in 1970. Port Rashid's construction was underway but the road system is limited and there are few buildings. A Water Tower can be seen in the centre, supplying fresh domestic water to the area. The many shops, stores and apartment blocks that characterise this area today have yet to be built. A single road (Al Mina Street) runs by Port Rashid to Jumeirah.
Sheikh Rashid sold large areas of vacant land near to Port Rashid by auction to local people. Plots were marked out by 45 gallon oil drums each marked by a Plot Number. A Condition of Sale was the Purchaser had to begin development on the land within a specific time period. Sheikh Rashid reclaimed the land if the Purchaser did not meet this condition. The reclaimed land was then resold to another Purchaser with the same conditions applying.
The "Abu Dhabi Road" did not exist as yet. Khaleed bin Al Walleed Road ran around the outside of Dubaiside to connect Dubai with Diera via the Al Maktoum Bridge. Residents could drive to Ras Al Khaimah on tarmac road. A graded track ran from Port Rashid towards Hatta terminating at the rock quarry. Otherwise a 4WD or a Camel were the only means to get anywhere else outside Dubai!
