This remarkable aerial view shows how Dubai used to be in October 1977. Dubai's newly built Trade Centre can be seen in the distance. There are few buildings between Dubai and Trade Centre although a dual carriageway road connects the two places.
Dubaiside Customs area on the Creek is still being used for cargo discharge while on Dieraside a passenger ship is berthed. Dubai was a "boom town" in 1977 but had few hotels. Dubai Intercontinental was being built but Sheraton Hotel had not yet started. Hotel rooms were booked, rebooked and "bartered" with visiting businessmen paying premium prices. To alleviate this situation Dubai arranged for a cruise ship to berth near the Intercontinetal Hotel and operate as an hotel. The ship can be seen between the buildings.
