An open air Cinema, a video shop, a cafe and a
small supermarket provided the only facility in the
area. The Cinema showed only Indian Films.
Government built some two storeyed houses near
to the Zoo for Government Staff. They looked across
Jumeriah Beach Road to the beach and the sea.
This old black and white photo was taken from
a Government House. Showing houses being built on the
beach and the easy access to the beach.
With little traffic, few houses and plenty of
sand there were few restrictions on how you traveled!
The 40 gallon oil drum served as a Garbage Bin that
was emptied daily by Dubai Municipality. Notice there
are now trees growing where before there was sand.
This aerial view shows Jumeirah Beach Road as
it was in 1971. Port Rashid is building but there is
little development along the Jumeirah Beach Road.
The only other road connecting to Jumeirah Beach
Road was the Hatta Road. It was initially built as
an access road to a Quarry to provide rock for the
building of Port Rashid. Subsequently it was tarmaced
and developed into a major road.
