Dubai's First Raft Race on Dubai Creek
The first Dubai Raft Race took
place on the Creek. The newly formed
Dubai Creek Football Club organised
the race as a social event for the
community. Teams had to carry their
rafts into the Creek at the start
of the race. The Rafts were heavy
and not easy to carry.
Once in the water the Teams raced
to a buoy then back to the finish.
The Race attracted spectators from
across the Community.
The Winner was the first Team
to carry their Raft across the Finish
Line on the banks of the Creek.
The Finish Line was a line drawn
in the sand. A Race Official complete
with clipboard was there to judge
who was first over the Line.
The Raft Race grew in popularity
and the Spectators increased. The
new Dubai Airport can just be seen
in the distance. There is no development
between the Creek and the Airport.
The Dredger can be seen in the
background. Sheikh Rashid had ordered
to Creek to be dredged to a depth
of 20 feet.
