First Dubai Grand Prix Circuit 1981
By the mid 1970s the Diera Coastline had been extensively eroded. Beachside roads and buildings were under threat. The Residents complained to Shiekh Rashid. He solved two problems with one solution. His other problem was Dubai Creek silting up and restricting Dhow traffic and adversely affecting trade. His solution was to dredge Dubai Creek to 20 feet depth and make it navigable. The dredge material was then used to reclaim Diera's disappearing coastline. A similar technique was later to be used for the development of Palm Island, The World and the enlargement of Jebel Ali Port. The new reclaimed Diera Corniche was to be for Foreign Embassies, Consulates and quality Hotels. The first and only substantial building built on the Diera Corniche to date is the Hyatt Regency Hotel. All the modern development has been largely concentrated on the Dubai side of the Creek. ![]()
The Diera Corniche Road CircuitDubai's First Grand Prix Circuit was laid out using newly constructed roads on the reclaimed Diera Corniche and the new Hyatt Regency Hotel as its centre piece. The road system remains almost the same today as it was for Dubai's First Motor Racing Grand Prix. Only the traffic's speed has changed!
The New Dubai AutodromeDubai is now in the forefront of World Motor Racing with the opening of its new Dubai Autodrome and the A1 Grand Prix Series. |
