Dubai Ports' Celebrations:One Millionth Container 19911991 saw Dubai's two Ports merge into the new Dubai Ports Authority and the one millionth container handled through Dubai's Ports since establishing their first Container Terminal at Port Rashid in 1976. An event was held at Port Rashid to celebrate. The Royal Marines Band of the British Army was on a "Goodwill" Tour of the Region and the highlight of the evening. But the centrepiece was a newly painted and decorated 40 foot shipping container. The Band was to make a dramatic entrance by marching out of the Container! But Shipping Containers are not designed for carrying people.
and the Band Played On......Events in Old Dubai rarely started on time. There was the inevitable delay. Everyone waited - including the 45 Band Members hidden away inside the closed 40 foot Container. Outside it was a pleasantly warm Dubai evening. Inside the Container it wasn't! Eventually the event started, the Container wheeled on to the "stage", the doors opened but no band appeared and no music was heard. Everyone inside the Container was too busy sucking in the cool fresh night air and adjusting their eyes to the glare of the lights to think about playing their instruments. Slowly they recovered and reorganised then marched out of the Container to start the celebrations.
Milestone for Dubai's PortsThis event marked the start of Dubai Ports' remarkable growth to become the 9th largest Container Terminal in the World and Dubai Ports Authority's successor, DP World, one of the three top Container Terminal Operating Companies in the World. What is a TEU?TEU -- Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit. A unit of measurement of the cargo carrying capacity of a containership. A standard shipping container is 20 ft long, and therefore equal to one TEU. A 40 ft long shipping container is equal to two TEUs. |
